I have a confession to make... as much as I love my designer handbags and beautiful clothes from department stores and malls, I am a BARGAIN HUNTER! I could spend hours perusing TJ Maxx, Marshall's, Ross, you name it... and I've been known to snag items from Wal-Mart and Target too.
There are a lot of people who turn their noses up at clothing from discount stores like Wal-Mart... because they don't realize the value to be had! I have a black, loose cardigan from Wal-Mart that I get a zillion compliments on, and people always guess it's from Urban Outfitters or the like. WRONG, it's "White Stag" and was a steal! MILLIONS of people shop at Wal-Mart daily, and we all know what some of the
People of Wal-Mart tend to look like. But it doesn't have to be that way!
I was watching Good Morning America yesterday, and saw a fashion challenge with Shauna Miller, the author of the awesome blog
Penny Chic. Shauna has a load of fashion experience in the high-end world, but chose to leave that and "put America’s cheapest discount department store on a fashion pedestal and ditch the skinny models for me and my friends". And she has done an AWESOME job!
Seriously, check out her blog... I think you'll become a convert. ALL of the images in this post are her work, and it is AWESOME. I'm not saying we should buy all our clothes at discount stores, but why not save a little money here and there? When your friends are lamenting over the thousands of dollars they've spent on their wardrobe with zero in savings, you'll be able to brag about paying off your student loans and contributing to your Roth IRA. And THAT is sexy. :)
I think a good way to go is shop Talbot's or Anne Taylor for the classic, never-go-out-of-style pieces and shop cheaper stores for the trendier items, especially accessories that denote the season more than, say, a white blouse. I don't shop at Wal-Mart because, with the death of Sam Walton, I think the Walton family became money-hungry--not to mention their discriminatory hiring and promotion practices. But I do shop at Target and K-Mart for some clothing items (especially kids' basics because she will just grown out of them anyway). The items that I think will not last into the next season, I try to get as cheaply as possible and that means going to discount retailers.
ReplyDeleteLTC M, I definitely agree in investing in timeless quality clothing, and going with cheaper versions for other things... Forever 21 has an AWESOME selection of accessories, which I tend to spend less on but buy more quantity. (I buy cheap $5 sunglasses there because I tend to lose them and break them.)
ReplyDeleteI also spend less on trendy items... but more on quality denim and tailored pieces that will last years!
