Montréal

I'd visited Montreal a few times before our trip this fall, but it was Dan's first time in the city!  We stayed for three nights in Old Montreal in an Airbnb, near the basilica.

I'd always heard the view of Montreal from Mont Royal was beautiful, so one of our mornings we took the Metro to a spot near the park and walked up to the highest spot in the city for the view.  I was NOT anticipating the stairmaster workout that would be required of us...  I did not think this one through very well. Thankfully, Dan had a bottle of water, so we didn't die, and I got some much-needed exercise.  But seriously, look at THE VIEW.

Can you tell that I'm cranky and tired?  No, because it was so nice and cool and pretty at the top, and we took a rest.  Tons of others had made the hike, even though it was on a weekday.  I was glad I'd decided to be hiker-chic and wear my Merrells.  Honestly, I rocked those shoes pretty much the entire trip.  Comfort first, style second for me on this kind of vacay.

I don't know why there was a piano there, but it looked pretty.

There was also a near lodge (with restrooms, vending machines, gift shop/info desk) with squirrel carvings.  I was all about the squirrel carvings.

The day we visited Mont Royal was kind of a stressful one for me.  I really hadn't planned things well.  So we had that monster hike to the top of Mont Royal, and then I was wanting to check out the Mile End neighborhood.  I'd heard it was a super hip 'hood, and that the original/famous St-Viateur Bagel shop was there.  But by the time we got out of the park, we didn't find a great place to grab a cab, and Uber had a long wait.  So somehow, despite my crankiness, we walked two miles to the bagels.  THEN I HANGRY-ATE THE BAGELS BECAUSE I WALKED TWO MILES.

The bagels are boiled in honey water, which is what makes them different from a New York bagel.  We went in and got whatever they had hot and fresh, which is what I'd read to do.  We weren't disappointed, and we devoured those bagels.  NOM.

After the bagels, we ate at a local crepe shop for lunch, which was just okay.  Nothing to write home (or blog) about necessarily.  I was kind of over hiking the city at that point, but I wanted to show Dan once of the big Montreal markets, so we took at Uber to Marché Jean-Talon.  I think I like Marché Atwater better, but this one was still beautiful and packed with wonderful things to see and eat.  We got some pastries, because after Quebec City, Dan was already in love with French pastries!

The nice thing about the market is that it's also close to a subway station!  We took the Metro back to the neighborhood where we were staying.  We saw people headed into the Basilica Notre-Dame, and we decided we wanted to make sure to visit.  The only downside?  After we paid to get in, I realized my camera battery was dead.  So once inside, only iPhone photo ops this time.  Womp womp.  But it's absolutely stunning inside and out, and well worth the price of admission.

Even better?  The organist was playing one of the regular concerts, so our visit was accompanied by magnificent music.  We even sat to listen for a while.  I got to hear one of my favs, Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" too.  The pictures don't do justice to the church's incredible ceiling, covered in stars!

We also strolled through Old Montreal during our time in the city.  It's mainly a couple of streets, the Old Port, and Place Jacques-Cartier in terms of shops and sights.  It's pretty, has plenty of touristy souvenir spots, restaurants, and more.

I must admit, after four nights in Quebec City, Montreal felt very urban and "big city" in comparison.  After all, it has four times the number of people!  It definitely strikes me as the Chicago or New York of Quebec, with all of the different neighborhoods, cultures, and cuisines.  It's a special place unto itself, and I'm really glad we decided to split up the trip and experience both!

Eating in Quebec City

There was no shortage of incredible restaurants in Quebec City.  Thanks to our cell phone plan extending to Canada ($2/day for normal use), we were able to leverage Yelp to find tons of delicious eats within walking distance of our hotel.

Our first night, we arrived fairly late and were craving pub fare.  We found Pub St-Alexandre (1087 Rue Saint-Jean), touted as an "authentic English pub" just down the hill from our hotel. It hit the spot, with delicious beers, sausage, and crispy fries, er, chips.  I chose the Imperiale (stout and white cheddar) and Goddfather (smoked paprika and fennel) sausages.  Dan really liked their beer selection (and prices).  I had a hard cider from Cidre du Minot, a Quebec cidrerie.  Definitely hit the spot on a chilly, rainy night!

Not surprisingly, Quebec had fantastic French pastries.  One of Dan's favorite things in Quebec City, hands down, was quick service restaurant/bakery/pastry spot Paillard.  We went there for breakfast, sandwiches, coffee, you name it.  You order at the register and grab a seat in the communal seating area.  Everything we had was delicious; I think Dan had a daily fougasse for breakfast.  He even stopped there on our way to the train for Montreal.  Their macarons were excellent too.

Pain au raisin, my fav in France, loved it Paillard!

One restaurant that we found on our own (and later had multiple people recommend) was La Bûche (49, rue Saint-Louis).  Yes, you may recall we stopped there on our beer tour later!  The restaurant had this hip sort of lumberjack lodge feel, and it claims its own spin on traditional Québécois food.  (Sidenote: I'm trying to put accents on these French words, but it ain't easy in Blogger, so don't nitpick if I'm missing a few.)  I chose to have their pâté chinois for my dinner feast.  It's their sort of regional version of a cottage or shepherd's pie.  While I'm not sure where the Chinese reference in the name comes in (some say it was from the Chinese cooks during railway construction), it is definitely delicious.  This one had mashed potatoes, corn, wine-braised beef, and a fruit ketchup.  (Note: In Quebec, I noticed that the word ketchup is used not just for Heinz-style condiments, but other types of compotes as well.)

I also indulged in a Caribou sangria; Caribou is a sweet Québécois alcoholic beverage that contains wine and maple syrup, so it made a bomb sangria!

Another favorite of Dan's was the restaurant and bar at Sapristi.  We went there for dinner one night for a little Italian comfort food, and we were not disappointed.  Then we went back on our last night for the bar and ended up doing shots of Jack Daniel's with the bartender.  Much love for Sapristi.  We had arancini and fried mozzarella on different occasions (ate it too fast to photograph), and on the night we ate dinner there, I had classic spaghetti and meatballs.  Delicious, and fresh!

Their pizzas were delicious too, with a great crust.  Eat it with a fork and knife, because they're topped with amazing-ness!  Warm, delicious, and comforting.  That's the food at Sapristi.  We also loved their ambiance, very hip, modern, and dark.

There were some other one-off spots worth mentioning on our trip.  We grabbed breakfast (our hotel had a discount) at Chez Jules, which offers a small breakfast menu in a brasserie.  Good food and zero complaints.

We also enjoyed Cochon Dingue in the lower town historic district, especially their poutine and Bretzdogs.  Basically, hot dogs in pastry = AMAZING, and poutine is classic.

For those wanting to get your hands around a solid burger, look no further than Le Chic Shack (15 Rue du Fort).  (Sounds like Shake Shack, eh?)  It really reminded us of the awesome burger spots around Nashville.  Super hipster decor and servers, craft beer on tap, and tons of burger options.  It's right by the Chateau Frontenac and near the tourist info center.

We both ordered delicious burgers with a great selection of sauces and toppings.  They have vegetarian options too.  I can't recall which ones we ordered (their website is under construction, so I can't consult the menu!), but we enjoyed it a ton.  Fries were crispy and flavorful, and their poutine was on point too.  We would have gone back if we'd stayed in Quebec longer!

Burger please!

If you're looking for craft cocktails, there are a ton to choose from at Batinse (1200 Rue Saint-Jean).  We also enjoyed their bacon-wrapped sausages.  They have a ton of small plates and bites to choose from, and you feel very young and hip being there in general.

As you can tell, we thoroughly enjoyed every bite of Quebec City.  And we haven't even gotten to what we ate in Montréal!

Sunday Lately: Doing, Appreciating, Designing, Humming, Expecting

I wasn't sure if I'd jump in with a Sunday Lately post, because I'm in the middle of a series about our trip to Quebec.  But then I figured, why not take a little break?  Here's what I'm up to lately.

DOING...
I'm helping prepare my DAR Chapter for its 10th Anniversary party this week!  Lots of things to do.  I've been pretty tired, so I need to make sure to look after myself while I'm doing all this stuff!

APPRECIATING...
I'm appreciative of the life I have.  I'm crazy busy, which is a dirty word in my mind because I believe that "busy" doesn't mean your life is full, you're just making prioritization decisions about a lot of things.  Last week, I went as a Guardian on a local Honor Flight, and it made me really proud to be an American Veteran, and proud to have such a wonderful life.  We have a lot of freedom.

I'm also appreciating quality time with Dan, which is why when he couldn't come home for dinner recently, I packed up our dinner and brought it to him so we could have a picnic.

DESIGNING...
I'm not designing much lately... but I've been looking at photos I've taken recently and thinking about color!  Like this piano...

HUMMING...
I'm humming She & Him's old albums, which I rediscovered were on my phone!  It's kind of relaxing.

EXPECTING...
I'm expecting this week to be a blur.  When will we rest?

I'm also expecting my Apple Watch to arrive this week.... EEEEEKKKKKKK I'm so excited!

THIS PAST WEEK...
  • On the Blog:  Have you been following our Quebec vacation posts?  Check out all the fun we had in Quebec City, with Montreal coming up next.
  • On Twitter:  I heard an incredible quote at the women's conference I attended this week.
  • On Instagram:  I decorated for fall, inspired by a sassy kitchen towel.
  • Shopping:  Everyone is loving this black floral print at Old Navy.  The blouse I want is sold out in my size!  Maybe I'll get the dress version instead.

And since I'm known for my food photos on these posts (LOL)  here's a sneak preview for an upcoming post, because we tried Hello Fresh meal kits.

What are you up to this Sunday?
