Things I've done this year to get my closet organized...
- DOWNSIZED in a big way. I have sold or donated away over a dozen pairs of shoes, bags upon bags of clothes, and even culled my handbag collection based on what I actually use. I can really see what I've working with.
- Turned my hangers backwards, so I can see what I haven't worn yet this year. Things that don't get worn after 3-6 months will be donated or sold based on seasonality.
- Switched by my shoe, belt, and scarf organization with some help from Pinterest and Amazon.
- Got my jewelry at eye level instead of in a jewelry chest.
This organizer was $20 on Amazon! |
- Kept only pajamas that had matching sets and let go of the rest.
- Tossed out old socks and bought new running socks for marathon training.
- Reorganized my workout clothes by type, so get me excited about cute gym outfits.
Workout clothes and socks/hosiery... old shoe boxes are great for organizing! |
- Seriously cut back on the t-shirts I've kept. If you know me, my drawer once held 2-3 times as many shirts. It was an emotional parting.
I am not big on New Year's resolutions anymore, but as an organizing fanatic (you haven't even seen my Levenger binders) I am seriously giddy over my wardrobe now. There's so much to choose from that I didn't even know about! I think I'll continue to downsize the closet (I'm looking for quality over quantity) and try to use my budget for worthy pieces. And when I do go trendy, I hope to do it on the cheap!
I love the idea of turning your hangers to see what you do and do not wear! I really need to do this to help downsize my closet!
ReplyDeleteI totally got the idea from Pinterest. It's a great way to help you choose what to wear in the morning too, because now I tend to look first at the things I haven't worn for outfit ideas.
Deletethanks for the reminder to go get that shoe organizer thing off amazon! I need that
ReplyDeleteMeghan, here it is! Under $15!
DeleteThis is so impressive! I bet things are so much easier to find now! I can't get over that shoe organizer-- looks like it holds a lot! Where did you get it?

I NEVER remember to wear bracelets or a necklace, and since I made these changes I have worn those every work day!
DeleteThe shoe organizer is $15 on Amazon. See my comment above to Meghan for the link!
These are all really great strategies! I really like the way you organized your belts and shoes - such a good idea! I love closet reorganizing so much - I am always trying to think of new ways to do things. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
ReplyDeleteI can't take credit, I always use the internet to be inspired for organization! :) Pinterest and bloggers rule for that.
DeleteThese are all really good ideas! I have donated/sold dozens of totes full of clothes, but I'm still overflowing! I'm gonna have to try the backwards hanger trick!

I always keep a bag in my closet to toss donations into, and I feel like I ALWAYS have another bag to donate... My closet is like a bottomless bowl of pasta at Olive Garden! :) Still, I always feel good to get rid of things. I'd love to get to the point where everything is simple and I LOVE every bit of it.
DeleteOh man! I really want to get stuck into my wardrobe after seeing how you organised yours! Good job! Im about to move in a few weeks, so I'm going to give my new wardrobe a good afternoon of organising!

The hanger trick is really helping me when I get into one of my "I have nothing to wear, I need to buy more stuff" funks. I think spending a day organizing your closet saves a TON of time and energy later on. Well worth the investment! And getting rid of as much as you can before a move is a great feeling.
DeleteThings keep creeeeping back into my closet after a massive cleanout first of the year...I don't know where these clothes are even coming from! As to what's already in there, I'm going to try that hanger trick! It's neat to think of how much you have you don't even REALIZE you have, and there's a great way to enjoy everything instead of grousing about not having "new" things.
ReplyDeleteEver since I started posting all of my monthly purchases to my blog via Budgeting Bloggers linkup, it has kept things from creeping back in! It holds be accountable to a certain budget, so when I do add things I make more deliberate purchases that are meant to fill holes in the closet. Even if you don't post them online, holding yourself accountable is the easiest way to stop the neverending closet!
DeleteI used to bring in just as much as I donated and it was going nowhere. LOL
